DESERVE project launched in September 2012 – press release

Espoo, November 20 2012: On November, 20 and 21 2012, Partners from 25 European organizations gave the “kick-off “ to DESERVE, a Research Project coordinated by VTT. It started on Sep 2012, will finish on Aug 2015. It has been co-funded by the European Commission under the Artemis Joint programme. The project is a joint effort of major vehicle manufacturers (Volvo, Daimler, Fiat), component suppliers (Continental, Ficosa, AVL, Bosch, NXP, Infineon, dSPACE, ASL Vision, Ramboll, TTS, Technolution), research institutes (VTT, ICOOR, ReLab, INRIA, CTAG) and universities (VisLab, IRSEEM, ARMENIS, IKA, INTEMPORA, University of Hannover) to develop modern advanced driver assistance systems.
The project aims at designing and developing a Tool Platform for embedded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to exploit the benefits of cross-domain software reuse, standardised interfaces, and easy and safety-compliant integration of heterogeneous modules to cope with expected increase of functions complexity and the impellent need of cost reduction.

Relevant market evidence and forecasts related to the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) show that these systems are going to become significant assets for the manufacturers (OEMs, suppliers) for the customers (in terms of product appeal) and for the overall society (significant improvements in road safety). The provided functions are becoming more and more popular, addressing different areas of support, such as longitudinal assistance, pre-crash, lane change assistance, automatic parking support and many others. The solutions implementing these ADAS-functions are becoming numerous, heterogeneous and provided by different suppliers, since the different functions are using different sensors and vehicle actuators.
To manage the level of complexity the different ADAS functions must co-exist and co-operate; their Human Machine Interface should be unified in order to implement an integrated, safe and harmonised interaction with the driver; the architecture should be flexible and modular, to easily allow addition of new (software) components, modules and functions based on the same set of vehicle sensors, actuators and HMI.
